Server Maps

Many OpenArena servers go through a list of popular maps, and clients connecting to these servers must either have matching pk3 files, or be able to download them before connecting. Luckily, most OpenArena server also set up a mechanism to enable automatic downloading of maps (and mods) only if client's autodownload setting is enabled. This is one of the easiest ways to get new maps - simply connect to the server and missing maps will be automatically downloaded before being played. Note that autodownload mechanism places pk3 files into the per-user game configuration location. On Windows, it's %APPDATA%\OpenArena\baseoa and on Linux it's ~/.openarena/baseoa.

External Sources

To get additional maps, consider visiting these sites:

  • q3a.ath.cx - approximately 10,000 maps in a nicely organized, searchable database.
  • lvlworld - lots of maps, feedback, preview videos, and overall a very nice user interface.
  • tnlsoft - not as nice as the first two, but contains a good amount of maps nevertheless.
  • duckpond - this server has a varying number of maps available for download.

To use these maps, download the pk3 file and place it in baseoa directory of your OpenArena installation. Note that there is one more place where map files can be placed - the per-user game configuration location. On Windows, it's %APPDATA%\OpenArena\baseoa and on Linux it's ~/.openarena/baseoa.

Mods

As of the latest OpenArena release (0.8.1 + 0.8.5 patch), only one mod is included with the game, namely, missionpack. To see what mods are known to work with OpenArena, visit the ModCompat page of OpenArena wiki. To install a mod, you will need to create a folder for it in your OpenArena installation location (same place where baseoa is located), and extract all (usually pk3) mod files to it. If you've done it correctly, you should be able to see and load the mod using in-game menu.

Personally, I am familiar with the following mods:

These mods are the ones most played and have been under constant development and improvement, as far as I know.

In addition, here are some of the lesser known mods that were made exclusively for OpenArena:

In case any of the mod sites become unavailable, I try to keep the latest released version of each mod here. Note that the files there might not be the latest or stable version!
